How to: Create a Data View Web Part in SharePoint 2010

Here’s the steps to create a Data View Web Part(DVWP) in SharePoint 2010 using SharePoint Designer 2010:

1. Make sure that you got your data in place e.g SQL Database with some data and that you can connect to the data

2.Start SPD 2010 and connect to your site:

3. Click on site pages in the left navigation and create a new web part page:

I named my to customers.aspx

4. Now create a new data source, by clicking the data source option in the left navigation and choose database:

5. Click on configure database connection:

and fill in the connection properties:

next, click on ok on the message image and wait a few seconds for the DB list to load:

and then choose the your DB and table from the list:

now, you have the option of choosing columns, filtering and sorting from the data source:

6. We are now going to add the custom database source to the web part page named customers.aspx and display the data, Edit the customers.aspx file in SPD 2010:

choose insert from the ribbon bar and insert a data view web part in the PlaceHolderMain control:

and you’ll get your customers from the DB:

save the page and view it using the browser:

image

You could do a lot of customizations to the DVWP from SPD like, sorting, formatting, conditional formatting, design, connections etc.

Data View Web Part is one of the best OOTB features in SharePoint and adds a lot of possibilities!
